School and Program Specific Advice

Please Note: The following information is provided from the Departments and Schools.

If your program/major is not listed, you can choose any FYS that interests you. If you have any questions about which FYS are appropriate for your major, please contact your department chair or advisor.

School of the Arts and Communication:

  1. Visual Arts and Art Education majors should select an FYS that satisfies either the Race & Ethnicity or Gender & Sexuality requirements of the College Core.
  2. Music majors (including Bachelor of Music – Performance, Music – Bachelor of Arts, and Music Education) are encouraged to choose an FYS that satisfies either the Race & Ethnicity or Gender & Sexuality requirements of the College Core.
  3. Arts/Comm majors should not select an FYS that meets on Wednesday morning.

School of Business:

  1. All programs: Do not select an FYS that meets on Wednesday mornings.

School of Engineering:

  1. All programs: FYS selection should not conflict with the student’s major requirements preregistration schedule.

School of Humanities and Social Sciences:

  1. All programs: Do not select an FYS that meets on Wednesday mornings.

School of Nursing and Health Sciences:

  1. Nursing and HES majors should select FYS preferences that satisfy one of the the Social Justice requirements of the College Core, such as Race & Ethnicity, Global Perspectives, or Gender & Sexuality.

School of Science:

  1. Physics majors are discouraged from taking an FYS with a 161 number.
  2. Mathematics Secondary Education majors are recommended to take an FYS with the Gender & Sexuality or Global Perspective requirements of the College Core. (Race & Ethnicity and First-Year Community Engagement are met with required Secondary Education courses.)
